Representatives of the Mining Association of Canada will be visiting the Philippines in December to inaugurate Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) in the country, according to The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP).
This was announced by COMP Chairman Gerald Brimo to the press during the 38th board meeting of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative on Wednesday, along with the organization’s decision to adopt the said program.
There will be an agreement signing between the two organizations during the visit, as well as workshops on implementing TSM. According to Brimo, it is “quite an elaborate program” whose execution would take an amount of time.
“We can sign this in December because it will take us about a year or more to implement it. The TSM has gone beyond Canada, it is global now,” he also told reporters.
TSM is an initiative established in 2004 by the Mining Association of Canada which acts as their “commitment to responsible mining”, according to their official website.
The goal of the program is to allow mining companies to provide for the needs of society “in the most socially, economically and environmentally responsible way”, enabling them “to turn high-level environmental and social commitments into action on the ground”.
