Surigao del Norte, Philippines – In a commendable demonstration of environmental responsibility, Silangan Mindanao Mining Company, Inc. (SMMCI) recently led a simultaneous clean-up drive across three major waterways near its host communities in celebration of World Water Day.

This initiative, as announced on SMMCI’s Facebook page, is part of the company’s quarterly commitment under the Adopt-an-Estero Program in partnership with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB). The program is focused on the Cagaasan-Boyongan-Timamana River, Belwang-Hilawan-Anislagan River, and Surigao River.

Notably, due to safety concerns related to high water levels in the Payao River, the team in Bad-as redirected their efforts to a community clean-up drive, ensuring participant safety while maintaining environmental stewardship.

The collaboration saw active participation from SMMCI employees, contractors, community members, and Barangay Local Government Units (BLGUs), highlighting a strong partnership between responsible mining and environmental care. Collectively, the participants amassed 272 kilograms of waste, comprising 120 kilograms of recyclables and 152 kilograms of residuals.

This initiative underscores SMMCI’s dedication to sustainable mining practices, aligning with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Ensuring the protection and sustainable management of water resources.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Promoting cleaner and healthier environments for local residents.
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – Advocating for waste reduction and proper disposal.
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water – Safeguarding water bodies from pollution.
  • SDG 15: Life on Land – Protecting biodiversity and natural ecosystems.

This clean-up drive exemplifies how mining companies can actively contribute to environmental preservation, challenging the traditional perception of mining as solely extractive. By integrating community involvement and environmental initiatives, SMMCI sets a precedent for the mining sector’s role in sustainable development.
