The Philippine Nickel Industry Association (PNIA) has lauded the decision of the Supreme Court to nullify the mining ban imposed by the Province of Occidental Mindoro.

In an official statement, the PNIA said the ruling represents a “significant affirmation of the balance between local government authority and national laws governing the mining sector.” The group emphasized that the decision reinforces the need for legal consistency in supporting responsible mining practices and economic development across the Philippines.

“The decision reaffirms the importance of aligning local ordinances with national legislation,” the PNIA said in its statement, noting that regulatory predictability is essential to long-term investment and development in the mining sector.

The Supreme Court’s ruling effectively mitigated Provincial Ordinance No. 001-2010, which imposed a general ban on metallic mining in Occidental Mindoro. The decision has been closely monitored by both industry stakeholders and environmental advocates amid ongoing debates over local autonomy, environmental protection, and national development priorities.

The PNIA emphasized that the outcome benefits not just the mining industry but also reinforces the legal framework that governs resource utilization across different jurisdictions.

“This ruling supports the long-term stability of mining investments and the rule of law,” the association added.

The group also called for sustained collaboration between local and national governments to ensure mining operations adhere to environmental and safety standards while contributing to sustainable development.

“We advocate for continued cooperation that promotes responsible mining aligned with the country’s growth agenda,” the PNIA stated.

The decision marks a potential shift in how mining-related ordinances from local governments may be scrutinized under national legal standards, with implications for other provinces that have imposed similar restrictions.
