Newly sworn-in Misamis Oriental Governor Juliette Uy has called for stricter enforcement measures against illegal mining operations, specifically targeting alleged unregulated activities in the municipalities of Opol and Manticao.

In a report by the Philippine News Agency, Uy urged the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and concerned local officials to take swift and coordinated action on the issue.

“If legalized and properly regulated, mining could significantly contribute to the development of more hospitals and the enhancement of healthcare services in Misamis Oriental,” Uy said in a statement Wednesday.

She emphasized the urgency of addressing what she described as the “rampant” illegal gold mining and quarrying activities in the province. According to the governor, her office received reports pointing to widespread, unregulated operations, prompting her public appeal.

Uy also announced plans to convene a joint meeting between her office, the MGB, and the relevant local government units to tackle the problem comprehensively.

The developments come as the new provincial administration signals a firmer stance on environmental regulation, resource management, and potential mining revenues for local development.
