Berong Nickel Corporation (BNC), a subsidiary of DMCI Mining, has secured a 25-year Mineral Production Sharing Agreement (MPSA) with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for its Long Point property in Aborlan, Palawan.

The deal, signed on August 8, 2025, grants BNC exclusive rights to explore, develop, and utilize mineral resources in the 2,177.34-hectare site. The MPSA, renewable for another 25 years, will take effect upon registration with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

“The MPSA is not just about resource development. It’s about creating shared value with the people of Palawan through responsible mining,” said Tulsi Das C. Reyes, President of DMCI Mining Corporation.

“We will work closely with our host communities to ensure development goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship and inclusive growth, guided by the same standards that shaped our operations and ongoing rehabilitation of the Berong mine in Quezon,” added Mr. Reyes

The company has already allotted PHP 1 billion for the Long Point project, covering fleet expansion, port infrastructure, ongoing exploration activities, and pre-operating costs . Covered by the Environmental Compliance Certificate, the mining property can produce 1 million Wet Metric Ton (WMT) of nickel ore annually. Long Point is expected to operate in late 2025.

Once operational, Long Point will open more than 1,000 job opportunities, mainly for local residents and indigenous communities. Several candidates are already enrolled in BNC’s Operators and Drivers Training Program in preparation for full-time roles.

BNC’s sustainability efforts in Palawan include the first approved Final Mine Rehabilitation and Decommissioning Plan (FMRDP) in the MIMAROPA region for the Quezon mine.

Now halfway through its six-year timeline, the rehabilitation program has:

  • Restored over 106 hectares of land
  • Planted more than 522,600 native seedlings and over 1 million mangroves
  • Rescued and released nearly 1,700 sea turtles

The Quezon mine, which BNC operated from 2006 until its depletion in 2021, generated 1,634 jobs, produced 10.3 million WMT of nickel ore, and contributed PHP 2.8 billion in taxes, royalties, and social development projects.
