As Typhoon Nando is forecast to fall in Batanes and Babuyan Islands, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has taken action and placed its field teams on high alerts as the typhoon could trigger landslides and flash floods in several places, Philstar reports.
The agency said it joined the emergency meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Saturday to coordinate preparations.
“As Typhoon Nando is projected to intensify into a super typhoon and bring heavy rainfall, the MGB is closely monitoring potential threats of landslides, flash floods and debris flow especially in high-risk communities,” the bureau said.
The Office of the Civil Defense reported a total of 111 families, or about 380 individuals, have been evacuated in the Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon caused by the combined effects of Typhoon Nando and southwest monsoon.
The agency is monitoring potential threats of landslides, flash floods, and debris flow in high-risk areas. Personnel are dispatched to provinces identified as vulnerable, with geohazard maps provided to local officials to help identify danger zones.
The agency’s regional offices are on standby to conduct fast geohazard assessments, advising residents to stay alert and follow official advisories from local governments.
