Masbate Gold Project (MGP) of Filminera Resources Corp. was cited as the best mine site by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) following the company’s rehabilitation efforts.
“This is the best mine I have visited. The mining operation is well-planned and well-engineered,” Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said.
In 2017, the Masbate Gold Project of Filminera and Didipio Gold Project of OceanGold Philippines Inc. in Vizcaya was the country’s largest producer of gold.
The two projects together accounted for 53 percent or P24 Billion of the country’s gold production value.
The DENR applauded MGP’s mine site and coral reef rehabilitation project. The coral reef rehabilitation aims to restore the coral reef cover in Port Barrera that has been affected by illegal fishing.
The rehabilitation efforts will mitigate the loss of coral reef within the marine protected area and enhance natural reef as it recovers.
MGP jointly operates with Filminera and the Philippine Gold Refining and Processing Corp in Aroroy town.
MGP is the only investment in the Aroroy municipality which helped the town achieved first class through employment, taxes, social development and management program, and environmental conversion efforts.
