The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Cagayan Valley has commended four mining companies for their significant contributions to the region’s reforestation efforts. They were especially praised for their role in environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
As reported by the Philippine Information Agency in an article, during a stakeholder forum held in Santiago City, DENR Regional Executive Director Gwendolyn Bambalan praised OceanaGold Philippines Inc., FCF Minerals Corp., Dinapigue Mining Corp., and JDVC Resources Corp. for investing a cumulative amount of PHP67.3 million into reforestation projects. These combined efforts have led to the establishment of 2,056 hectares of new forest plantations across Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, and Nueva Vizcaya.
Bambalan emphasized that the companies’ actions reflect the principles of responsible mining, thus showcasing that the industry can go beyond extraction to actively regenerate the environment. “Mining firms must not only extract but regenerate,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of combining resource utilization with ecological restoration.
In addition to the environmental positives, the reforestation projects also provided economic benefits. A total of 1,114 individuals from 45 barangays in the region were engaged in the programs, receiving livelihood opportunities and capacity-building support, empowering local leaders and community members. This creates a model for inclusive and sustainable forest management.
The forum, organized by the DENR’s Mines and Geosciences Bureau, aimed to showcase the best practices and encourage continued private sector support for government-led environmental programs.
