The Philippine Society of Mining Engineers (PSEM) Caraga Chapter has staged its first-ever Mining Symposium in Surigao City, spotlighting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles as the framework for responsible mining.
Held from August 22 at Hotel Tavern, the three-day event carried the theme “Navigating Towards a Greener Environment, Resilient Mining Communities and Good Governance.” It gathered industry leaders, policymakers, the academe, and community stakeholders to align on sustainability goals for the mining sector.
At the core of discussions was the need for companies to go beyond operational efficiency by embedding environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and transparent governance into their business models. Experts and speakers highlighted ESG as “the new cornerstone of modern mining practices.”
Silangan Mindanao Mining Co., Inc. (SMMCI), one of the Gold Sponsors, announced on its Facebook page that it sent delegates from Safety, Mine Development, Human Resources, Community Relations, and Environment. The company said its participation demonstrated its integrated approach to responsible mining, ensuring that “safety, people, environment, and community development are integrated into its operations.”
The event featured keynote messages and technical presentations on sustainability challenges and opportunities in the sector. It also provided a platform for collaboration among mining professionals, local officials, and regulators aiming to balance economic growth with environmental protection and community resilience.
Sessions were designed to share best practices, explore strategies, and highlight mining’s role in nation-building. Organizers underscored that when practiced responsibly, mining can serve as a driver for positive change in Caraga and beyond.
What do you think—can ESG truly reshape the future of mining in Caraga and across the Philippines? Join the discussion and share your perspective.
