An inter-agency coalition, supported by multi-sectoral groups, is initiating an information campaign in South Cotabato schools to promote awareness about the safe use of mineral and fossil fuel deposits in Region 12.
Philippine Star reported that local radio stations in Central Mindanao announced that the Mines and Geosciences Bureau 12 (MGB-12), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources 12 (DENR-12), the Soccsksargen Responsible Miners Association, Sagittarius Mines Incorporated, and Blaan tribal leaders spearheaded the initiative to prevent illegal mining activities in the region.
The campaign also aims to educate students about the benefits of legitimate, environmentally responsible mining operations monitored by government agencies and advocacy groups.
Organizers conducted dialogues last week at Tampakan National High School, Tablu National High School, and Liberty National High School, all located in Tampakan, South Cotabato.
North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza, who chairs the Regional Development Council 12, expressed her support for the campaign and pledged to encourage council members to assist in achieving its objectives.
Meanwhile, Blaan tribal leader Domingo Collado, an Indigenous People’s representative to the Tampakan municipal council, stated his support for the initiative, noting its significance as the first of its kind in South Cotabato.
Collado emphasized the importance of public support for anti-illegal mining efforts within tribal domains in South Cotabato and nearby provinces.
Additionally, T’boli chieftain Edmund Ugal, whose community spans Lake Sebu and other areas in South Cotabato and Sarangani, also pledged to assist in the campaign’s future engagements, underscoring its relevance to responsible mining.
Liberty National High School principal Vicente Garces commended the visit by mining advocates, stating that their discussions highlighted the harmful effects of illegal mining while showcasing the benefits of lawful and sustainable mineral extraction.
