The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 2 is intensifying its efforts to enforce biodiversity conservation regulations in mining operations through the implementation of DENR Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2022-04.
Manila Bulletin reported that the DENR briefed mining companies on the provisions of DAO 2022-04, which outlines measures to rehabilitate ecosystems affected by mining activities and ensure environmental sustainability.
The DENR said that these regulations not only benefit the environment but also foster sustainable development in communities impacted by mining operations.
The initiative is part of the agency’s drive to promote responsible resource management while safeguarding biodiversity and benefiting local communities.
DAO 2022-04 included key components such as the Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring System, biodiversity-friendly enterprises, Landscape Wildlife Indicator patrol, and deputation of Environment and Natural Resources Officers.
DENR Region 2 Regional Executive Director Gwendolyn Bambalan emphasized the importance of compliance, urging mining firms to actively contribute to the protection of natural ecosystems, saying that the mining firms’ participation can guarantee the build up of the community’s well being as well as ensure the sustainability of natural resources.
Mining companies also shared their achievements and presented their 2025 Work and Financial Plans for biodiversity conservation, in alignment with their Annual Environmental Protection and Enhancement Program.
Representatives from FCF Minerals, OceanaGold Philippines Inc., Dinapigue Mining Company, and JDVC Resources Corporation attended the event, showing their support for the agency’s conservation efforts.
