DMCI Mining Corp. surpassed its yearly rehabilitation targets for its Berong nickel mine in Palawan, which is anticipated to finish after a six-year timeframe.
The rehabilitation project started in June 2022, extending 109 hectares of surface mine, 209 hectares of silt control structures, and 25 hectares of stockpile area.
In a statement to the Philippine Stock Exchange, DMCI Mining President Tulsi Das Reyes expressed the commitment of the Consunji-led firm to addressing their impact on the environment as well as their host communities.
He added that DMCI’s first-year rehabilitation target accomplishment is a testament to the hard work and dedication of their team.
In just six months, its subsidiary Berong Nickel Corp. (BNC) successfully rehabilitated over 30 hectares out of the full-year target of 34 hectares.
Hastening its erosion control and soil stabilization efforts, Berong Nickel installed 672 coconets, approximately six times its yearly target of 116. At the same time, it also laid down 1,721 meters of geo-textiles.
This year, BNC also accomplished its seedling production and transplantation targets, producing 214,052 seedlings, a 152-percent increase from its 85,000 initial targets,
