Four of the country’s top mining firms drew thousands of visitors with a tunnel-inspired booth at Baguio Charter Day, underscoring the sector’s historic role and continuing contribution to the city’s economy, Herald Express reports.
Benguet Corporation, Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company, Itogon-Suyoc Resources, Inc. (ISRI), and Philex Mining Corporation jointly mounted the exhibit, which recreated the look and feel of a mining tunnel.
Atty. Ed Aratas, Legal Division Manager of Philex Mining Corporation, explained that mining firms allocate part of their revenues to community programs under their Social Development and Management Program (SDMP). These funds support projects in livelihood, education, infrastructure, and healthcare for host and neighboring communities.
Engineer Valeriano Bongalos, Jr., resident manager of Benguet Gold Operations, added that Baguio benefits economically even when some mines operate outside the city limits. Workers and their families shop, study, and spend leisure time in Baguio, generating business for local establishments and boosting the tourism industry.
Midge de Leon, consultant at Benguet Corporation, noted that the exhibit served as a memory lane for families who have long been connected with the industry. Local officials also commended the initiative for raising awareness about the contributions of mining to the city.
The booth, set up beside Malcolm Square, recreated the look and feel of a mining tunnel. Inside, visitors saw photographs, historical items, and artifacts such as the belongings of Benguet Corporation’s last American president. The display gave the public a chance to experience what it feels like to be underground.
The idea for the mini-museum came from journalist Nonette Bennett, daughter of a mine worker. She said she envisioned the project as a reunion of mining families and a way to preserve the history of Baguio’s mining communities.
The joint project of the four mining companies was considered a success by organizers and participants. Company representatives expressed hope for more collaborations in future civic events.
