The government plans to expand mining activities in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Surigao, and Davao, prioritizing critical mineral deposits in these areas.

In BusinessMirror’s recent report, this initiative was detailed in a new roadmap presented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. during a sectoral meeting at Malacañang.

The DENR emphasized the necessity of fully utilizing the country’s rich mineral resources to enhance the mining sector’s contribution to the economy.

The comprehensive plan aims to revitalize the critical minerals industry by spearheading exploration initiatives and boosting mineral production.

Key regions identified for their high potential include the Cordilleras, Surigao, and Davao, known for their rich nickel, copper, and gold deposits. The government’s strategy involves making these areas more accessible by improving infrastructure and utility support.

The plan also focuses on streamlining the permitting process, promoting responsible mining practices, and addressing political and legal challenges.

Additionally, it aligns with government policies on inclusive growth, green job creation, and ecological balance, and considers geopolitical strategies for navigating global mineral trade.
