Despite the demands of mining-affected communities, The Marcos Jr. administration has not yet responded to calls on continued mining operations, said Alyansa Contra Mina said.
The environmental advocacy group stated that the existing 11 large-scale mining projects across the country are “simply unacceptable” amidst a climate emergency.
Alyansa Contra Mina said that with the “miserable state of the people living in the mining-affected region,” particularly the residents of Sibuyan Island in Romblon and Brooke’s Point in Palawan, government and DENR must be accountable.
The communities await the actions to be taken by the Marcos administration, the group said, adding that there must be investigations to be conducted, and through the cancellations of large-scale mining contracts, a permanent stop to mining operations must take place.
Last February, extractive operations in Sibuyan Island were halted due to anti-mining protests.
Alyansa Contra Mina expressed their strong call on the Marcos administration and DENR Secretary Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga to act upon the demands of the people in light of large-scale mining activities concerns.
