Representative Antonio Agapito Legarda is advocating for sustainable development in Antique, opposing mining activities that could threaten the province’s rich natural resources.
In a Philippine News Agency report, Legarda vowed to fight against the proposed 3,715-hectare mineral reservation in Patnongon, Sibalom, and San Remigio, arguing that Antique’s natural wealth should be protected.
He is considering legislative measures to block the proposal and has sought reassurances from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that they will respect public opposition.
Meanwhile, the Antique Provincial Board has formally rejected the mineral reservation plan, warning that it could open doors to future mining operations and pose risks to the environment and local communities.
Board Member Karmila Rose Dimamay emphasized that preserving Antique’s resources is vital for sustainable development, environmental integrity, and the well-being of its people.
Senator Loren Legarda also called for prioritizing green technology, sustainable agriculture, and eco-tourism over mining, stating that these industries align with Antique’s cultural and economic identity.
Antique is home to the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park and the Sibalom Natural Park, which provide critical water sources and support agriculture and eco-tourism in the province.
Legarda urged stakeholders to focus on long-term, sustainable economic strategies that safeguard Antique’s natural heritage for future generations.
