The Baguio City council ordered for a joint geotechnical investigation in Mines View Park after residents reported seeing fissures and cracks on the road and fences of the city’s crowd-filled spot.
The order was made possible after the approval of a resolution filed by Councilor Elmer Datuin. The investigation is to ensure the safety of the park, assuring residents and easing their fears.
The city council requested assistance from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR MGB), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Baguio City District Engineering Office, and the City Engineering Office to conduct the study as soon as possible.
In a statement, Datuin noted the urgency of the said geotechnical assessment as this could determine what corrective measures and actions should be taken if necessary and whether prevention of widespread damage is needed.
People, locals and tourists alike, gather to the park which was constructed in the 1950s aiming to display the mines of Itogon and Baguio that used to be the city’s lifeline before tourism. Now, the site is occupied by houses and visitors that go to the park to shop as much as to enjoy the view.
