Beneath the surface, they unearth resources; above all, they uplift humanity. The Mines & Geosciences Bureau (MGB) beams with pride as Filipino miners from Energy Development Corporation (EDC) and Apex Mining Corporation return home as heroes from a grueling yet triumphant humanitarian mission in Myanmar. After a devastating earthquake rocked the region on March 28, these miners traded their hard hats for halos, proving their mettle far beyond the mines, as detailed on MGB’s official Facebook page.

The 89-strong Philippine Inter-Agency Humanitarian Contingent (PIAHC), including EDC’s Rescue Doctors and Apex Mining’s Safety Team, became a lifeline for Myanmar’s affected communities. The teams conducted urban search and rescue operations, delivered critical medical consultations through the Philippine Emergency Medical Assistance Team, and distributed vital supplies.

“The successful completion of the PIAHC mission in Myanmar serves as a testament to the Philippines’ commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian assistance,” MGB proclaimed, spotlighting the mission’s role in the “One ASEAN, One Response” initiative that binds nations in crisis.

For 11 days, these miners faced the unknown, separated from loved ones yet driven by duty. “Their dedication, even while separated from loved ones, exemplifies the highest ideals of humanitarianism,” MGB shared, capturing the heart of their sacrifice. Their efforts earned high praise from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who hailed the PIAHC’s “outstanding work.”

At Villamor Air Base, Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro and a cadre of officials, including DENR Assistant Secretary and MGB OIC Director Engr. Michael V. Cabalda, welcomed them home as national treasures.

DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga immortalized their valor with Certificates of Recognition for 14 standout responders: EDC’s Teofredo Esguerra, Gerard Natividad, Roy Joseph Trinidad, and Michael Odiongan, and Apex Mining’s Rodel Serad, Jayson Chavez, Ramil Nasayao, Ruben Hayag, Jerome Año, Ruel Quial, Mike Jheck Macalanga Sr., Staywarch Tiedra, Peter De La Cerna Jr., and John Rey Igcasan. Each certificate is more than paper—it’s a testament to courage that turned despair into hope.

MGB sees this mission as a milestone, showcasing the mining sector’s unique alchemy of grit and grace. These miners didn’t just aid Myanmar; they forged stronger ASEAN ties and redefined what it means to serve. Their story is a call to recognize the quiet giants among us, whose work underground fuels heroism above.
