Filminera Resources Corp. and Philippine Gold Processing and Refining Corp., mining companies based in Masbate province, in partnership with GlobalMedic, provided PHP 2.2 million worth of emergency kits to more than 2,000 families affected by the intensifying unrest of Mount Mayon.
Evacuation centers situated at the Matanag, Mabinit, and Bonga in Legazpi City, Gabawan Evacuation Center in Daraga, and Comun Elementary School in Camalig received emergency kits consisting of solar lights, water filtration system with two lids, spigot, sponge, and filter, and hygiene with soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste.
In a report by the Manila Bulletin, Filminera said their joint initiative with Philippine Gold and GlobalMedic, a volunteer-driven Canadian charity, to assist distressed communities during calamities started in 2021. Since then, it has reached approximately PHP 6.8 million worth of donations.
Filminera, Philippine Gold, and the Mines, and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) also joined forces through the Tabang Bicol Relief Operations in Camalig for a donation of PHP 500,000 worth of food buckets and relief kits to the affected families in Barangays Anoling, Taladong, Cumon, and Bunkuras, along with the local government of Camalig.
Filminera, which holds mining tenements in Masbate, is currently the largest operating gold mine in the country, while Philippine Gold, which employs the processing plant, is owned by B2Gold Corp., one of the world’s biggest operators of gold mines based in Vancouver, Canada.
