DMCI Mining Corporation and Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore the feasibility of developing a nickel processing plant in the Philippines. The partnership aims to enhance the country’s nickel value chain, strengthen processing capabilities, and position the Philippines as a key player in the global nickel market.
The agreement, signed on March 4, 2025, brings together the expertise, assets, and resources of both companies to enhance the country’s nickel processing capabilities.
“Establishing an economically viable nickel processing plant in the Philippines requires several factors to align, including clear government policy directions and regulations, but proactive preparation is crucial. With the significant nickel resources needed and complex logistical challenges to navigate, early planning is essential for long-term success,” NAC President and CEO Martin Antonio G. Zamora.
NAC will contribute its knowledge in nickel processing technology and exploration, while DMCI Mining will provide assets and expertise in construction and engineering.
Over the next two to three years, the firms will study viable processing technologies, identify an optimal plant site, and ensure a stable nickel ore supply through joint exploration.
The companies will also discuss the equity structure for a potential joint entity to develop and operate the facility.
The proposed plant will process low-grade nickel ore that is currently not viable for export, maximizing the country’s mineral resources and boosting the local nickel industry.
“By laying the groundwork early, we can help position the Philippines as a key player in the global nickel supply chain,” said DMCI Mining Tulsi Das C. Reyes.
