Employees and contractors of OceanaGold (Philippines), Inc. gathered at the Didipio Mine to plant 1,060 seedlings in celebration of the International Day of Forests 2025. The event, aligned with this year’s theme “Forests and Foods,” highlighted the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and biodiversity preservation.
The tree-planting activity, spearheaded by the MEPEO/Environment team, utilized the innovative Miyawaki and Zai methods of reforestation. According to a Facebook post by Didipio Mine, the group planted species such as Makaasim, Mayapis, Ulayan, Kalumpit, and other seedlings. The said reforestation techniques are “renowned for [their] effective and cost-efficient way of ecological and biodiversity reforestation,” as noted in the post.
The International Day of Forests, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, is observed annually on March 21 to raise awareness about the critical role forests play in sustaining life and to encourage tree-planting campaigns worldwide.
This is not the first time OceanaGold has engaged in environmental efforts at its Didipio operations. The company has been consistently recognized for its reforestation programs, having planted thousands of trees in the region as part of its responsible mining commitments.
OceanaGold’s efforts come amid broader discussions about balancing resource extraction with ecological preservation, a topic of interest to local communities and environmental advocates alike.
