Residents of Barangay Bulalacao and nearby villages in Bataraza, Palawan joined the commemoration of Earth Hour and other activities planned by Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) last March 30.
The activities were part of the global campaign aiming to increase awareness on the fight against climate change.
Mangrove planting in Barangay Tarusan, landscape enhancement in Barangay Bulalacao, Bike-for-the-Future (Bike for-a-cause), Zumba Dance Contest, and live band performance to encourage more community participation were among the activities organized by the mining firm prior the highlight of the celebration – the lights off event.
Community members took part of the celebration highlight from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
“By doing this altogether, we will be sure that the Earth will still be a habitable place for more generations to come,” CBNC’s community relations manager Ernesto Llacuna was quoted saying in a Palawan News article.
Annual partaking of the Earth Hour event since 2013 is the company’s way of helping the planet by making more people understand the issues and empowering them to contribute in mitigating the effects of climate change.
To also spread awareness in other villages, the mining firm decided to execute their organized events in Bulalacao from Barangay Rio Tuba where past events were always held.
“More residents are already aware of this global issue of climate change. This time, we wanted that others may also be aware of this,” Laurence Amores, community relations supervisor of CBNC said.
The Earth Hour is held annually to encourage individuals and communities to turn off their lights for one hour as a symbol of support in fighting climate change and having the commitment for a better planet.
