Platinum Group Metals Corporation (PGMC), the Surigao-based operating arm of Global Ferronickel Holdings, Inc. (FNI), has been recognized for its long-term environmental efforts with the Best Adopt-an-Estero/Waterbody Program award during the Water Summit 2025 held in Quezon City on June 27.
The summit, organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB), highlighted community-centered projects and cross-sector partnerships under the Adopt-an-Estero Program. With the theme “Community-Led Rehabilitation and Multi-Sector Partnerships: Empowering Communities through the Adopt-an-Estero Program,” the event brought together public and private stakeholders in water management and ecosystem restoration.
PGMC was one of only two mining operations nationwide to be recognized and the sole nickel mining company to receive the award. The citation showcases the company’s decade-long commitment to rehabilitating the Kinalablaban River in Claver, Surigao del Norte through sustained ecological interventions.
Under the Adopt-an-Estero/Waterbody Program, PGMC implemented various environmental initiatives including river cleanups, riverbank stabilization using boulders, and revegetation efforts with more than 30,000 hills of native plants and bamboo. The company also worked with local government units on waste segregation, recycling programs, and continuous water quality monitoring.
These efforts have resulted in improved river flow, better water quality, and thriving vegetation in the area. According to the company, the initiative not only benefited the ecosystem but also contributed to the well-being of the local community by restoring the functionality of the river.
The recognition proves PGMC’s alignment with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and its commitment to responsible mining. Global Ferronickel Holdings said it is exploring opportunities to replicate the program in other operational areas as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts.
