In a significant demonstration of solidarity, Filipino miners have joined the humanitarian mission to assist communities affected by the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar. The disaster, which struck on March 28, has claimed over 2,000 lives and left thousands injured or missing. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), mobilized private sector partners, including Apex Mining and Energy Development Corporation, to contribute to the Philippine Inter-Agency Humanitarian Contingent (PIAHC).

As directed by Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga, the DENR-MGB coordinated with private companies to deploy a team of 15 personnel from Apex Mining alongside other Philippine responders.

Michelle Mendoza, Senior Geologist of the Lands Geological Survey Division and agency focal for inter-agency coordination, highlighted the importance of these efforts under DENR Undersecretary Augusto Dela Peña’s guidance.

The Philippine contingent includes urban search-and-rescue teams from various government agencies and private entities. Notably, Apex Mining’s safety team and Energy Development Corporation’s rescue doctors are actively participating in life-saving operations. Their involvement reflects a broader shift toward corporate responsibility and resilience-building in vulnerable regions impacted by climate-related disasters.

This mission also aligns with ASEAN’s “One ASEAN, One Response” framework, emphasizing regional cooperation in disaster management. Office of Civil Defense Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno remarked that the initiative symbolizes the Philippines’ commitment to supporting its neighbors during times of need.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau shared updates on its Facebook page, expressing gratitude for the compassion exhibited by mission partners. The agency hopes their efforts will bring comfort to Myanmar’s people during this challenging period.

The deployment of Filipino miners to Myanmar highlights an inspiring narrative—one where industries traditionally criticized for environmental impacts are stepping up as key players in humanitarian aid. This development invites reflection on how corporate sectors can contribute meaningfully to global resilience efforts.

How can private companies like Apex Mining redefine corporate responsibility through disaster response? Share your thoughts on this inspiring collaboration and its impact on global resilience efforts!
