Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Raphael Lotilla met with Swedish Ambassador Anna Ferry at the agency’s central office in Quezon City to discuss ways to align the Philippines’ mineral development goals with Sweden’s expertise in green and responsible mining, Philstar reports.
The meeting marked a new phase in Philippine-Swedish cooperation focused on sustainable mining and the development of critical minerals essential to the global clean energy transition. Both officials discussed opportunities for technology transfer, research collaboration, and capacity-building partnerships to help advance the country’s low-carbon and climate-resilient transition.
Also present were Environment Assistant Secretary and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Director Michael Cabalda, Swedish Trade Commissioner Johan Lennefalk, Senior Trade Promotion Officer Giselle Yap, and Jayne Yang of Business Sweden.
The DENR said the discussion also tackled measures to strengthen environmental and social standards in mining operations, develop critical minerals, and promote circular-economy practices aimed at reducing waste and improving resource efficiency.
According to the Geological Survey of Sweden, the Nordic country produces nearly 90 percent of all iron ore mined in the European Union. This makes it a strategic partner for the Philippines in advancing responsible mineral development and clean-mining technologies.
How can global partnerships like this shape the Philippines’ path toward greener and more responsible mineral development?
