The Philippine Nickel Industry Association (PNIA) has proactively integrated the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its social development initiatives, ahead of government mandates.
PNIA President Dante Bravo said the initiative ensures that the mining sector continues to contribute meaningfully to national sustainable development while aligning with global standards.
In a Philippine Star report, PNIA welcomed the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) directive mandating mining firms to integrate the 17 SDGs into their Social Development and Management Programs (SDMPs).
Bravo added that PNIA has been proactive in adopting sustainability principles, having published its first SDG report in 2020 and a follow-up report last year.
The organization remains compliant with 15 out of the 17 SDGs, reflecting its commitment to environmental protection, community welfare, and inclusive growth.
PNIA’s initiatives also focused on poverty reduction, health and well-being, and environmental conservation, particularly in areas where mining plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable practices.
In 2023, PNIA members injected Php 4.3 billion into community development, generating jobs, funding health programs, providing scholarships, and planting nearly 4.3 million trees.
Bravo called for stronger collaboration with stakeholders to ensure that SDMP funds are efficiently utilized for the long-term benefit of local communities.
PNIA reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mining, emphasizing sustainability, environmental stewardship, and economic development.
