Carmen Copper Corp. trained its Sangi port’s personnel on oil spill response last May 10 as an answer to Bureau of Custom’s (BOC) mandate for port facilities in the country to have disaster preparedness and management plans in place.
A total of 31 port personnel and safety officers on oil spill response of Sangi Port in Toledo City underwent trainings administered by exports from the Philippine Environment and Technological Systems and Services Inc. (PETSS, Inc.)
The said training included pro proper use of the containment boom including discussions about the types of oil that may spill and its behavior, the hazards associated with oil spill and basic steps in spill control, among others.
Carmen Copper loads and ships its copper concentrates from Sangi Port to smelters in Leyte and internationally to the countries of China and Japan.
In 2017, the mining firm acquired a 300-meter oil spill containment boom for its Sangi Port as preventive measure if situations of marine disasters such as oil spill occurs in the area.
To protect critical areas like reefs and shorelines, a containment boom which is a temporary floating barrier is used to contain marine spills.
A simulation and an actual deployment of Sangi Port’s containment boom was performed by PETSS, Inc. experts and training participants.
Aside from following BOC’s mandate, the activity initiated by the mining firm was also part of the celebration of the Month of the Ocean this May.
