Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) achieved a record of 16.5 million metric tons (MT) in coal shipments in 2024. This surpassed its previous peak of 15.8 million MT, driven by heightened demand from both international and domestic markets.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), SMPC president and chief operating officer Maria Cristina C. Gotianun emphasized the company’s consistent operational efficiency.
“For the third year in a row, the firm has operated at full capacity, producing 16 million metric tons of coal within the limits set by our current Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC). This milestone highlights the SMPC team’s dedication to meeting rising local and global energy demand,” she stated.
Foreign coal shipments in 2024 increased by 4% to 8.4 million MT, with exports to China surging by 46% to 7.6 million MT. This growth underscores the continued demand from one of the world’s largest coal importers. On the domestic front, coal deliveries also rose by 4% to reach 8.0 million MT. The increase was attributed to higher consumption from cement manufacturers and Calaca power facilities.
Among the domestic sales, 1.3 million MT were supplied to cement plants, with Cemex Holdings Philippines Inc. (CHP), an associate company, accounting for 20% of this volume.
Looking ahead, Gotianun remarked, “While we anticipate market prices to further normalize in 2025, we remain focused on strengthening our customer network and enhancing operational efficiencies to effectively support national energy security and meet the growing demand from the industrial and cement sectors.”
The achievement demonstrates SMPC’s pivotal role in addressing energy requirements, contributing to industrial progress, and reinforcing the Philippines’ energy security amidst a dynamic global market.
