Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) continues to prioritize the well-being of its host communities by spearheading initiatives aimed at holistic community development. On March 6, 2025, the integrated energy company conducted its quarterly medical mission across the barangays of Tinogboc, Alegria, and Semirara in Caluya, Antique, with a strong focus on HIV awareness and prevention.
In collaboration with the Provincial Health Office of Antique, the medical mission provided free HIV testing and screening services to 325 beneficiaries from the three barangays. Additional testing was conducted at the Narra Complex to extend services to SMPC employees, reinforcing the company’s commitment to fostering a healthier workforce. The initiative highlighted the importance of prevention, early detection, and treatment.
A key highlight of the event was an HIV awareness symposium led by Egbert Catabay, HIV Case Manager at Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital. Catabay emphasized the critical role of education in reducing stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV and AIDS while advocating for increased community support.
“Malaki po yung pagpapasalamat namin, especially sa SMPC, sa pag-invite sa amin sa ganitong event dahil napakalaking tulong po ito para sa mga taga-Semirara para mabigyan sila ng impormasyon regarding HIV and AIDS [at] para mawala na po yung stigma and discrimination sa mga taong may HIV,” Catabay said.
Through its regular medical missions, SMPC provides vital healthcare services while promoting awareness on pressing health issues. By offering free HIV testing and educational sessions, the company seeks to empower residents and employees with the knowledge and resources necessary to protect their health and combat misinformation.
Beyond health initiatives, SMPC also continues to empower local farmers by providing seeds to the Alegria Seaweed Planters and Farmers Association (ASPFAI) as they expand into vegetable farming. With seeds for hybrid watermelon, yardlong beans, tomato, eggplant, okra, and bottle gourd, 270 members can now diversify their income and contribute to local food security.
As SMPC continues to uphold its commitment to community welfare, initiatives like these play a crucial role in building a more informed and inclusive society.
