The Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) has recently lauded SR Metals Inc. (SRMI) and Coral Bay Nickel Corp. (CBNC) with the Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award (PMIEA) at this year’s awards ceremony of the Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANMSEC).

Held in Baguio last week, the two major miners bested 20 other mining firms for its environmentally conscious and socially responsible efforts in mining and mineral-processing activities, the BusinessMirror reports.

SRMI and CBNC won in the surface-mining and mineral-processing categories, respectively.

SRMI is the umbrella company of the state-of-the-art Tuba Nickel Mining Project based in Agusan del Norte and is acknowledged for its best practices by global mining standards.

Meanwhile, CBNC owns a Hydrometallurgical Processing Plant in Rio Tuba in Bataraza, Palawan for its nickel and cobalt sulfide extractions from low-grade nickel ores in the Rio Tuba nickel mine.

Furthermore, the PMIEA has also given Platinum and Titanium awards, as well as “Best Of” titles, for other mining companies as part of the event.

Platinum awardees are Agata Mining Ventures Inc., Filminera Resources Corp., Hinatuan Mining Corp. (Taganaan), Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corp., Taganito Mining Corp., Holcim Mining and Development Corp. (Davao), Holcim Mining and Development Corp. (La Union), Northern Cement Corp., Republic Cement and Building Materials Inc. (Teresa), and Mindanao Mineral Processing and Refining Corp.

Among the Platinum recipients is OceanaGold Philippines Inc., which previously won the 2016 presidential award along with SRMI and CBNC.

Winners of the Titanium Award, on the other hand, include Filminera Resources Corp., Apo Land and Quarry Operation, Eagle Cement Corp, Holcim Mining and Development Corp. (Bulacan), Cagdianao Mining Corp., Carmen Copper Corp., Philippine Gold Processing and Refining Corp., and Taganito HPAL Nickel Corp.

Lastly, the DENR-led “Best Mining Forest”, “Safest Mines”, and “Best Mines Personalities” contests were also featured at the 64th ANMSEC.

This year has boasted a line-up of diverse miners for the 2017 Best Mining Forest such as the Aglubang Mining Corp. (exploration), Holcim Mining and Development Corp. (nonmetallic), Taganito Mining Corp. (metallic), and Mindanao Mineral Processing and Refining Corp. (mineral-processing plant).

While Philex Mining Corp., Northern Cement Corp., Holcim Resources and Development Corp. (Davao), Holcim Mining and Development Corp. (La Union), OceanaGold Philippines Inc., Agata Mining Ventures Inc., SRMI, FCF Minerals Corp., CBNC, and Philippine Mining Service Corp. (Alcoy Plant) won Best Mining Forest Runners-Up.

The PMIEA is established under Executive Order 339, Series of 1997, as government’s way “to promote the efficient management of the environment and ecology in the exploration, development, and utilization of the country’s mineral resources to ensure sustainable development” in the country’s mining sector.
